[...] As you probably already know, Jeff Mangum was in town last night playing a show at UPenn’s Irvine Auditorium that sold out in 34 seconds. That means a lot of people who wanted to go, including myself, couldn’t get tickets. So, we’re left to check out the setlist to see what we missed and watch whatever videos someone was able to sneak in. Fan-shot videos of “Oh Comely” and “The King of Carrot Flowers” have made their way to YouTube via NewJawnVideos. And the setlist was found on Setlist.fm. Check it all out below. Also, you can read a review of the show by Naomi Shavin for The Key and by Steve Goldberg here. [...]

Totally agree. I'm sick of hipsters thinking they can only enjoy a pop song after someone does an acoustic cover wearing glasses. You should publish this somewhere!

Love the analysis despite some of it over my head. I just love music that much. Bowie is a classic and considered awesome by many but I still think his quality/skill/talent is rather underrated. He's not an imitator. To say so is lazy i think. No shit he loves Dylan/Reed/VU/Iggy but there's more to 'em than that. Any good artist is being disingenuous if they act "like whatever" about who their influences may or may not be. I can only assume you're familiar w/ the 1969 version of "Space Oddity". Have you seen the promotional clip and in general wadda ya think of the song and vid? The later version i like better but the '69 version? V cool.

I have a weird relationship with this batch of songs, as it is one of the few that were written while I was the drummer, and then I re-learned when I switched to guitar. I seem to remember the quarter note triplet thing being abandoned for straight eighth notes on the way to the verse, which (after much back and forth)we decided to keep as triplets. I was also going through a pretty serious mid period beatles thing which probably explains the "Ticket to Ride" drum quotes on the second verse.
